When an individual talks to their Florham Park cosmetic surgeon about the types of cosmetic procedures available to them, skin resurfacing may be suggested. This cosmetic procedure can help reverse the wrinkling effects of aging, heredity and various lifestyle habits such as smoking, sun exposure, poor nutrition or alcohol consumption. Sometimes pigmentation can change and produce brown spots or blotchiness. This can occur simply because of age, or it can be the result of taking birth control pills or becoming pregnant. There may also be other genetic factors which cause the skin’s pigment to change. It may be that the skin’s surface has become uneven as a result of acne. Any of these types of skin conditions can be improved by undergoing skin resurfacing. This cosmetic procedure basically causes a controlled injury to the skin which causes the skin to heal which replaces the old or bad skin with new skin tissue.

There is nothing quite as enjoyable as a warm New Jersey summer afternoon where the sun invites everyone to come out and enjoy it. It feels warm, and most people enjoy having a beautiful tan. Even though these temporary results are pleasant, any dermatologist can explain the long term dangers of over exposure to the sun’s damaging rays. Too much time in the sun can cause skin damage which show in the form of skin laxity, wrinkles, skin cancers or discolorations. Sun spots are very common among those who spend too much time soaking in the sun’s warm rays.

There are several injectible skin treatment options which can help reduce facial lines, wrinkles and skin folds and help reveal and restore a radiant youthful look. The advantage to using injectibles is that they are minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures which will not require downtime in most cases. Dermal fillers are procedures which can help create much younger looking skin. Some of the most popular injectible skin treatments used by New Jersey cosmetic surgeons include Botox, Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane. These can each be used individually or they may be combined in a customized treatment plan which can yield very dramatic results.

The spinal cord is surrounded and protected by the spinal column which is made up of 24 bones called vertebrae. It also consists of the sacrum and the coccyx or tail bone. Between the vertebra there are discs which are designed to absorb shock so the spinal cord will not have to. The spine’s flexibility and ability to move and bend are due to the proper position of these discs. Nerves that reach all the other sections of the body branch out from the spinal cord by passing through the openings provided by the vertebrae.

Where is the cervical spine?

Lifestyle is a term generally applied to the way we live and its effect on our health. Lifestyle includes the number of hours we work, the amount we sleep, the foods we eat, the alcohol other beverages we drink, the tobacco we smoke, the amount we party, the time we spend with our family, the amount of stress we place in our own lives, how much we exercise and more.  Our respective lifestyles have some unique components, as well as some common elements that cross cultural boundaries.  Most of us want a lifestyle that ultimately promotes mental and physical well-being.

Men who choose to have vasectomy, most often, but not always, have chosen a lifestyle that involves children.   Again often, but not always, my patients tend to be fairly healthy, with a stable routine, at least a moderate amount of exercise, and a reasonable diet.  They tend not to smoke or party to excess. Children are commonly regarded as a stabilizing factor in one’s life.

What is Psoriasis?

Dermatologists deal with many patients who have been diagnosed with a skin disease called psoriasis. This skin condition has certain symptoms which are very common to those who suffer with it. Psoriasis can cause pain, inflammation, and scaling. Normally there is a process called cell turnover where over a period of time new skin cells grow deep under the skin and slowly come up to the surface. When an individual has psoriasis, the cells rise to the surface too quickly and then they pile up on the surface of the skin. Most of the time this is displayed on the surface as thick, red and scaly patches which can feel very sore or become itchy. Many times these unpleasant patches are discovered on the knees, elbow, or areas of the legs, face, palms, lower back, scalp or soles of the feet. However, they can also be found in other areas like toenails and fingernails, inside the mouth or in the genital area.

How is Male Fertility Testing Done?

About ninety-five percent of couples will conceive after a year of trying.  A fertility evaluation is recommended for those who do not conceive.   Women are generally evaluated by their gynecologist.   The doctor will take a history asking about child hood illnesses, surgeries, the menstrual cycle and so forth and then perform a physical examination.   Then, generally, blood tests and imaging studies may be recommended.

Men are generally evaluated by a urologist, and may be best evaluated by those with a special interest or fellowship training in infertility, also sometimes referred to as Male Reproductive Medicine.   Similar to the female evaluation, a urologist will ask the male about his history including childhood issues, prior surgery on the male genital system, exposures, and so forth.  Unlike the female evaluation, however, the first laboratory test is generally a semen analysis.  Sometimes the patient is referred to the urologist in the setting of an abnormal semen analysis.

Ask the general public in Short Hills what eczema is and you may get some surprising answers which are very different from the definition you’ll receive when you ask a dermatologist. For many years, the average individual has classified any type of skin condition as eczema and for a large part; many different skin conditions are considered a type of eczema. Even some common conditions such as diaper rash or an outbreak of poison ivy can be variants of eczema. This is because the most general definition of eczema is a skin condition caused by inflammation. Even though it is not specifically caused by an allergy, atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. Individuals who have eczema are more likely to develop other types of allergic conditions such as asthma. Eczema causes the skin to become dry, itchy and red. In some cases, it becomes cracked or leathery and it can appear on any part of the body causing great discomfort.
