History of the Liposuction Procedure

Cosmetic weight loss surgery is definitely a life changing procedure and in some instances it can even be life saving. These extreme measures are typically suitable for patients who are obese and have not had any success in losing weight through traditional means. Many have even tried some medically supervised strategies for weight loss which use diet modification, exercise and in some cases medications. When these measures fail to work for an obese or overweight individual they may choose to speak with a plastic surgeon who can help them choose an appropriate surgical procedure to be used for cosmetic weight loss. Over the last few years the statistics on obesity have soared and about 18 million people in the US are considered to be obese or at least 100 pounds over their ideal weight. With this rise in numbers also comes the number of cosmetic weight loss procedures. According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery the number of patients seeking some form of weight loss procedure has increased from 16000 in the early 90s to about 180000 by 2005. This sharp increase in obesity is most likely behind the increase in cosmetic weight loss surgeries. Most can agree that they are an appropriate way to deal with obesity but the question is how safe are they?

Two Basic Types of Weight Loss Surgeries

Cosmetic weight loss procedures fall into two categories. They are either restrictive or malabsorptive. Occasionally the two are combined to make a single treatment option. A restrictive weight loss surgery will work by restricting the stomach size and slowing down the process of digestion. A stomach normally holds about 3 pints but post surgery it will only hold about an ounce. It will stretch out after awhile to hold 2 or 3 ounces. The premise behind these types of methods is that when the stomach is smaller the patient cannot eat very much and this will translate into lost weight. A malabsorptive procedure is usually more invasive and it will change the way food is taken into the body and how it is processed. Not only will these types of procedures restrict the stomach size, it will also remove parts of the digestive tract so that the body cannot easily absorb calories.

There are about 600,000 vasectomies performed in the US every year. A vasectomy is usually desired by an individual who wants a permanent form of birth control. The spinal cord is surrounded and protected by the spinal column which is made up of 24 bones called vertebrae. It also consists of the sacrum and the coccyx or tail bone. Between the vertebra there are discs which are designed to absorb shock so the spinal cord will not have to. Nerves that reach all the other sections of the body branch out from the spinal cord by passing through the openings provided by the vertebrae.

Either filler is placed into an elastomer shell. Saline fillers remain in liquid form while silicone has several different viscosities. Silicone fillers can be thinner liquids all the way to thickened gels. Because of its aesthetic qualities, silicone is the more popular choice.

Lifestyle is a term generally applied to the way we live and its effect on our health. Lifestyle includes the number of hours we work, the amount we sleep, the foods we eat, the alcohol other beverages we drink, the tobacco we smoke, the amount we party, the time we spend with our family, the amount of stress we place in our own lives, how much we exercise and more.  Our respective lifestyles have some unique components, as well as some common elements that cross cultural boundaries.  Most of us want a lifestyle that ultimately promotes mental and physical well-being.

Men who choose to have vasectomy, most often, but not always, have chosen a lifestyle that involves children.   Again often, but not always, my patients tend to be fairly healthy, with a stable routine, at least a moderate amount of exercise, and a reasonable diet.  They tend not to smoke or party to excess. Children are commonly regarded as a stabilizing factor in one’s life.
