How to Look Younger

Dermatologists in New Jersey have several suggestions for those who want to maintain younger looking skin. Many skin experts suggest that part of maintaining healthy and vibrant looking skin requires that the individual eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, avoid smoking and protect the skin from the sun. It can also be beneficial to have a face massage, refrain from smoking and keep the skin properly moisturized. Each individual may work closely with their dermatologist to develop a customized skin care plan as each person is different.  Here are some general skin care tips that are applicable for those who wish to keep their skin looking young and healthy.

Skin Protection

There is no way around it, for those who desire to keep their skin looking and feeling younger they will have to protect it from the sun’s damaging rays. It’s essential to wear sun block when the skin is going to be exposed to the sun. Exposure to the UV rays of the sun not only increases the risk for developing skin cancer, it can also affect the skin’s elastin which leads to wrinkles and sun induced aging. In many cases once the skin has been damaged by the sun there is no way to reverse it. The best way to help the skin retain that youthful glow is to protect from damage in the first place. There are three ways to effectively protect the skin. Many choose to avoid the sun during its most intense hours. If it is reasonable or possible, staying inside during the hours between 10 am and 4 pm is advised by many dermatologists. When exposure to the sun cannot be avoided, some opt to wear clothing that covers the skin such as long pants or long sleeved shirts. A hat can help protect the neck and facial area from the sun’s damaging rays as well. For those who are going to be outside in the sun for more than 15 to 20 minutes a sunscreen should be applied. About 20 minutes before going outside, apply a generous amount of sunscreen to the areas which will be exposed to the sun. It is important that sunscreen has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

Clean and Moisturize

To protect the skin and keep it looking young, it is essential to wash your face before turning in each night. This practice can help remove bacteria, dirt and makeup which can end up damaging the skin or causing breakouts. The key to retaining a youthful look is to wash the facial area gently and use warm, not hot, water. Also remember to take baths or showers which are no longer than 15 minutes as too much time in hot water can strip the skin of its essential oils causing it to become dry. When washing the face, use soaps that are mild and those which do not contain a lot of additives like perfumes or dyes. These additives can irritate the skin. Gently pat the skin dry so that all of the moisture is not removed. Using a good moisturizer is also important as it will help keep the skin from drying up which can cause it to look dull.

Get Adequate Sleep

It may seem disconnected, but getting enough sleep is essential for maintaining healthy skin. When an individual does not get enough sleep, their skin can begin to look tired and old, especially when they begin to develop bags under their eyes. It is important to get plenty of exercise which will also help reduce stress and help create a healthy level of tiredness which will help one sleep. Aerobic exercise can also offer the benefit of helping increase circulation which will deliver more oxygen throughout the body and help the skin stay vibrant looking and healthy. It is suggested that one gets 8 hours of sleep each night in order to keep the body and the skin looking and feeling younger.
