Woman with a Migraine
Botox has long been used to improve facial features by removing wrinkles around the mouth, eyes and forehead. Botulinum toxin has been successfully used for more than 20 years now to help smooth out facial wrinkles. It is an injectible substance which is used by many cosmetic surgeons in New Jersey. By 2008 it was reported that almost one fourth of all cosmetic procedures performed used Botox which is a form of purified protein. Smoothing out the facial features is by far the most common cosmetic use for Botox, but over the last few years many other uses have been discovered.
Between 2 and 3 percent of the population are affected by a condition called hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. When topical solutions fail to work, many turn to Botox injections to help bring some relief. Several Botox injections are given which will block the release of the chemicals which stimulate the sweat gland. Botox can help limit or even stop sweating for up to 4 months, but long term maintenance can be scheduled.
This injectible filler can be used by medical professionals other than cosmetic surgeons. Dentists use Botox for treating an enlarged jaw muscle. The masseter is used for chewing and when it is overused by excessive gum chewing or clenching of the teeth, then it can become enlarged and can cause difficulty with eating. When Botox is injected into this muscle it causes it to atrophy so that it becomes smaller and comes back into alignment with the face which brings much relief to sufferers. Typically, a patient will experience relief for about 3 to 4 months before needing another treatment.
The FDA recently approved the use of Botox in the treatment of chronic migraines. Migraines have traditionally been a very difficult condition to treat and can be accompanied by a wide variety of uncomfortable symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness or sensitivity to light. The truth is that physicians are not even quite sure how Botox works to relieve migraines, but they know that symptoms are relieved by its use. It is typically injected in seven areas around the forehead, temples, neck and shoulders. The main theory that most physicians adhere to is that it somehow prevents the pain signals from reaching the sensitive nerve endings.
The original use for Botox was to treat both uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes. Botox worked to weaken the muscles which caused the spasms which made the eyes cross. One patient noticed that it was also reducing her wrinkles, so she requested that the physician continue administering it even though she no longer had the spasms or uncontrolled blinking. It has also been used to relieve other muscle spasms. It has specifically been used to treat the platysma bands, or vertical bands in the neck area. This area can experience very painful spasms which are very uncomfortable. The use of Botox and some physical therapy has yielded very positive results. Another muscle spasm that causes some individuals discomfort is the muscle contractions which affect the bladder. Overactive bladder is a condition which is caused by spasms in the urinary muscles. Just like many other procedures, Botox calms the affected muscles and causes the unwanted contractions to cease which brings the patient relief. Some have also found relief from the spasms associated with multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy. This is because an injection of Botox causes the muscles to relax which allows the patient to have fewer contractions and spasms. Through Botox injections many patients have found relief from various discomforts that are caused by various types of spasms or muscle contractions.
There are several injectible skin treatment options which can help reduce facial lines, wrinkles and skin folds and help reveal and restore a radiant youthful look. The advantage to using injectibles is that they are minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures which will not require downtime in most cases. Dermal fillers are procedures which can help create much younger looking skin. Some of the most popular injectible skin treatments used by New Jersey cosmetic surgeons include Botox, Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane. These can each be used individually or they may be combined in a customized treatment plan which can yield very dramatic results. Continue reading
New Jersey residents excitedly embrace the summertime months. While the weather is enjoyable, it can also wreak havoc on the skin. Summertime will require that special attention be given to the skin in order to keep it healthy and in good shape. The dermatologist can suggest many ways to protect the skin during the harsh summer months. Here are just a few tips for how to care for the skin in summer.
Think About the Basics
One of the best ways to protect the skin’s health is to protect it from overexposure to the sun. Whenever it is possible, avoid the sun from 10 am to 4 pm which is the time of day that the sun is most dangerous. Even when it is cloudy it is a good idea to wear sun block that offers at least 15 SPF and contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These two ingredients block both UVB and UVA rays from damaging the skin. Whenever you are going to be out in the sun for more than 15 minutes it is a good idea to wear sunscreen. Continue reading
Woman with Liposuction
One of the most common cosmetic procedures in NJ is liposuction. Liposuction is not a difficult procedure when it comes to technicalities, but it does take a lot of strategic planning as well as an artistic touch to achieve the aesthetic goals. Liposuction is a procedure through which a cosmetic surgeon removes Lip. Over the years, liposuction has changed and there have been many questions about the safety of the procedure. As advances have been made in technology used in these procedures, they have become safer.
Is liposuction safe?
When liposuction is performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon in Essex County, it is a completely safe procedure. They will take their time to make a proper evaluation and decide how the surgical technique will be used to meet the goal of the client. Just like any type of cosmetic surgery, liposuction can have a significant effect on the body in order to improve the appearance. As with any surgical procedure there are potential risks such as bleeding, nerve damage, or infection. However, every board certified plastic surgeon will have undergone intensive training in order to safely perform the techniques. They will have also passed qualifying exams to ensure they have the knowledge and skill to perform the surgical procedure as well as meeting specific requirements that must be met for continued recertification. These are all in place to ensure that the procedure is safe and complication free. Continue reading
Many people try to exercise and control their weight in order to achieve a flat abdomen. Some individuals can seemingly do a hundred sit ups a day and not achieve their goal. When a person has done everything they know to do with no success, they contact a NJ plastic surgeon for an abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure through which excess skin and fat is removed from the abdomen. Most of the time, the removal of the extra skin and fat will result in a much smoother and firmer abdominal profile. This surgical procedure is a highly individualized procedure which must be a choice made by the person and not just to try and please someone else.
Who should get an abdominoplasty?
A tummy tuck is not a substitute for following a weight loss program or an exercise regimen. It is really only suggested by cosmetic surgeons for those who are already healthy and who are maintaining at least a stable weight. An individual must have realistic expectations before entering into an agreement with the cosmetic surgeon. Even though the end result of an abdominoplasty is permanent technically, it will still take work to maintain the success that is achieved. Individuals who are planning to enter a weight loss program to lose a substantial amount of weight, or a woman who is considering getting pregnant in the future are advised to postpone the surgical procedure until a later time. Diagram of a vasectomy reversal
There are about 600,000 vasectomies performed in the US every year. A vasectomy is usually desired by an individual who wants a permanent form of birth control. The procedure is a very quick minor procedure which can be done in a NJ doctor’s office. During a vasectomy, a small segment of the vas is taken away and then the open ends are sealed. This is an effective way of blocking the sperm. It will have no effect on the male’s sex drive since testosterone is not transported through the vas. Sometimes a male will choose to get a vasectomy reversal. Even though a vasectomy is considered to be a procedure with permanent results, it is possible to have it reversed through another surgical procedure. Continue reading
Allograft Cancellous Sponge
The spinal cord is surrounded and protected by the spinal column which is made up of 24 bones called vertebrae. It also consists of the sacrum and the coccyx or tail bone. Between the vertebra there are discs which are designed to absorb shock so the spinal cord will not have to. The spine’s flexibility and ability to move and bend are due to the proper position of these discs. Nerves that reach all the other sections of the body branch out from the spinal cord by passing through the openings provided by the vertebrae.
Where is the cervical spine?
The part of the spine which runs through the area of the neck is called the cervical spine. In this piece of the spine there are seven vertebrae as well as eight pairs of spinal nerves. There are two very common problems that most people who have trouble with the cervical spine experience: stenosis and herniation. When a spine surgeon in New Jersey schedules a cervical spine surgery, the type of procedure will largely depend on what is causing the spine’s problem. Continue reading
Woman with smaller breast
A mammaplasty or breast reduction is a cosmetic procedure which removes the excess fat, skin and tissue from the breasts. A breast reduction is in order when a woman has unusually large breasts which cause her pain or discomfort. For those who are considering a breast reduction, it is important to speak to a plastic surgeon. Most of the time plastic surgeons in Short Hills will provide a free consultation to determine if the woman is indeed a good candidate for a breast reduction. The cosmetic surgeon can describe the procedure and its benefits along with the risks and possible complications that could occur. They can also help an individual set some realistic expectations concerning the procedure and its outcomes.
Why Have a Breast Reduction?
A breast reduction will change the size, firmness, shape and weight of the breasts. There can be several reasons why this type of surgery is pursued. When a woman has large breasts, they can be very heavy and cause chronic neck and back pain, posture problems and skin irritation. Over sized breasts can cause a constant pulling on the straps of the bra which leaves indentations across the shoulders. In most of the cases, a breast reduction surgery can alleviate these problems. Women who have larger breasts can have a difficult time participating in many sports or activities. The larger sized breasts can make the activity painful in many cases, and at best it can be very awkward for the woman; breast reduction solves these problems. Another reason to consider this type of cosmetic surgery is because of the desired changes in the appearance. It can be very embarrassing to have breasts which are large and out of proportion to the body’s height and weight. Younger women and teenage girls are particularly self conscious when they are wearing swimsuits and various other styles and types of clothing. An additional problem can be that it is difficult to find clothes that fit properly.
Overview of the Surgery
When a plastic surgeon performs a breast reduction they will remove some of the skin and tissue from the breasts so as to reshape them and reduce their size. They may also take the time to make the areola around the nipple smaller. The cosmetic surgeon will make incisions in the breasts through which the excess skin and tissue are removed. This can be a single incision or multiple ones depending on how much work is needed. Some circumstances require that the nipple and areola be removed and then repositioned properly. A breast reduction is usually performed in a hospital or an outpatient surgery center and only a general anesthesia is used. The actual surgery will take between 3 and 5 hours. In most cases, the patient will not need to stay overnight in the hospital. For instances which only require a small reduction, the surgery can be done using only local anesthesia.
Are there any risks involved?
Just like any other type of major surgery, breast reduction has some possible risks such as bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia or infection. Other risks may include things like losing sensation in the nipples or the areole. Loss of the areole or nipples is also a possibility. There is a risk of scarring and for women who have a higher BMI (body mass index) there is an increased risk of poorly healing wounds can be a problem. Some women have difficulty breast feeding following this type of cosmetic surgery and in some instances the shape, size, contour and position of the nipples or breasts can be off. This can lead to more surgeries to correct the problems.
