There can be any number of reasons why someone chooses to have a breast implant. They are basically designed to improve the size and shape of the breasts in the long term. Over the last decade, the most common reason for women to consider plastic surgery is to have a breast augmentation performed. For women who are aged 18 and above breast implants is a very popular type of cosmetic enhancement.
Basics of Breast Implants
New Jersey plastic surgeons have been performing breast augmentations and implants for many years. The first silicone filled envelope was developed in the 60s and were used for cosmetic enhancement as well as breast construction. Because of some of the adverse side effects they were taken off the market but by the 90s the safety concerns had been properly dealt with and the FDA approved both silicone gel and saline for the filler used in the implants. Either filler is placed into an elastomer shell. Saline fillers remain in liquid form while silicone has several different viscosities. Silicone fillers can be thinner liquids all the way to thickened gels. Because of its aesthetic qualities, silicone is the more popular choice. Continue reading “What are Breast Implants?”→
As soon as the weather permits, New Jersey residents head outside to enjoy the warm sunshine. Most people are very aware of the importance of protecting the skin by using sun screen, but many are unaware of the importance of protecting the lips with lip balm. Most of us do not think about the chances of developing lip cancer, but they are as real as the chances for developing any type of skin cancer. Our lips are an essential part of our body and really worth protecting. They help us eat and talk properly; and they even provide a measure of protection from eating foods that are too hot or too cold. Yet we tend to take them for granted. Many residents in Livingston are trying to decide whether or not dental implants are for them or not. Most of the time, dental implants are considered to be a form of cosmetic surgery since they are a method for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants are surgically fused to the jawbone just beneath the gums. These metal posts can provide a stable form of support to which artificial teeth are attached. When dentures or bridges are mounted to the implants it will provide security so that they will not slip especially when speaking or eating. Crowns are sometimes placed over the implants and feel much more natural than simple conventional dentures or bridges. Because they are typically considered to be a cosmetic surgery, implants are not always covered by insurance. Some carriers pay less than 10 percent of the costs. Lifestyle is a term generally applied to the way we live and its effect on our health. Lifestyle includes the number of hours we work, the amount we sleep, the foods we eat, the alcohol other beverages we drink, the tobacco we smoke, the amount we party, the time we spend with our family, the amount of stress we place in our own lives, how much we exercise and more. Our respective lifestyles have some unique components, as well as some common elements that cross cultural boundaries. Most of us want a lifestyle that ultimately promotes mental and physical well-being.
Men who choose to have vasectomy, most often, but not always, have chosen a lifestyle that involves children. Again often, but not always, my patients tend to be fairly healthy, with a stable routine, at least a moderate amount of exercise, and a reasonable diet. They tend not to smoke or party to excess. Children are commonly regarded as a stabilizing factor in one’s life. Continue reading “Are There Lifestyle Limitations After Vasectomy?”→

Dermatologists in Livingston deal with many patients who have been diagnosed with a skin disease called psoriasis. This skin condition has certain symptoms which are very common to those who suffer with it. Psoriasis can cause pain, inflammation, and scaling. Normally there is a process called cell turnover where over a period of time new skin cells grow deep under the skin and slowly come up to the surface. When an individual has psoriasis, the cells rise to the surface too quickly and then they pile up on the surface of the skin. Most of the time this is displayed on the surface as thick, red and scaly patches which can feel very sore or become itchy. Many times these unpleasant patches are discovered on the knees, elbow, or areas of the legs, face, palms, lower back, scalp or soles of the feet. However, they can also be found in other areas like toenails and fingernails, inside the mouth or in the genital area. Continue reading “What is Psoriasis?”→
About ninety-five percent of couples will conceive after a year of trying. A fertility evaluation is recommended for those who do not conceive. Women are generally evaluated by their gynecologist. The doctor will take a history asking about child hood illnesses, surgeries, the menstrual cycle and so forth and then perform a physical examination. Then, generally, blood tests and imaging studies may be recommended.
Men are generally evaluated by a urologist, and may be best evaluated by those with a special interest or fellowship training in infertility, also sometimes referred to as Male Reproductive Medicine. Similar to the female evaluation, a urologist will ask the male about his history including childhood issues, prior surgery on the male genital system, exposures, and so forth. Unlike the female evaluation, however, the first laboratory test is generally a semen analysis. Sometimes the patient is referred to the urologist in the setting of an abnormal semen analysis. Ask the general public in Short Hills what eczema is and you may get some surprising answers which are very different from the definition you’ll receive when you ask a dermatologist. For many years, the average individual has classified any type of skin condition as eczema and for a large part; many different skin conditions are considered a type of eczema. Even some common conditions such as diaper rash or an outbreak of poison ivy can be variants of eczema. This is because the most general definition of eczema is a skin condition caused by inflammation. Even though it is not specifically caused by an allergy, atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. Individuals who have eczema are more likely to develop other types of allergic conditions such as asthma. Eczema causes the skin to become dry, itchy and red. In some cases, it becomes cracked or leathery and it can appear on any part of the body causing great discomfort. Continue reading “What is Eczema?”→
Flap reconstruction is typically a way to rebuild a breast into a desired shape using muscle, skin and fat from another section of the body. Many times it is done as part of a breast reconstruction which must be performed after a mastectomy. But it can also be done for those women who have had problems with normal breast development. Another term for tissue flap surgery is “autologous” which simply means that the tissue used in the reconstructive surgery comes from the person’s body and not another source. In most cases, breast reconstruction surgery will require more than a single operation. The first part of the surgery can be done at the same time a mastectomy is performed, but it can also be done as a separate procedure. The areola and nipple are usually created later on.
